Cold plunge: chiller or ice?
A cold plunge is a tub of cold water you sit in for a few minutes. The whole buying decision comes down to one question: how will the water get cold and stay clean?
The three setups
- Ice and a stock tank or barrel. Cheapest to start. You buy bags of ice before every session and change the water often. Fine for a trial month; most people quit buying ice long before they quit wanting to plunge.
- Tub with a chiller. A small refrigeration unit holds the temperature you set and a filter keeps the water usable for weeks. This is what the people who plunge every day own.
- Chiller plus ozone or UV sanitation. Less chemistry and fewer water changes. Worth it if the tub lives indoors.
Check before you buy
- Where it lives. Outdoors in New England, the tub and chiller have to be rated for freezing nights, or you drain it for winter.
- Noise. Chillers hum. Ask to hear one running.
- Power. Most chillers plug into a normal outlet, but check whether the one you like needs its own circuit.
- A cover that locks, if there are kids or pets around.
Try the ice version for a month first. If you are still plunging four weeks in, buy the chiller.
Cold water is a real shock to the heart and breathing. If you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, ask your doctor before you start.
